When I was a little girl I was very fond of Brian Froud's movies and books. They were clever, imaginative, and the art and designs were amazing and filled me wonder, they still do. Brian Froud draws faerie faces, particularly pixies, in a rather distinct sort of style. I love their scrunchy little faces with their cute little upturned noses and wide mouths full of shiny teeth, not to mention their mysterious shining eyes. There's anoter added element to their look that I could never pin down, it was just something magical. Occasionally I would see people who actually had these features, such as a little girl who grew up across the railroad tracks from me. The family was kind of white trash but their kids were the only ones in town, and so I would occasionally go over and play with them. The younger sister I called pixieface, because she looked like a little blonde pixie. She loved this nickname and even through middle and highschool when I saw her, I would call her this. Around her freshman year she dropped out (her older sister already had) and ran off with some man. I still don't know what happened to her.
She wasn't the last pixieface I met, infact over the years I've met, or at least seen several. And all of them have had a common factor that sometimes makes me wonder, they're movers. Free-willed bohemians that travel lightly moving from place to place, job to job, and more often than not they seem to be musicians or artists. They often have a strange sort of understanding of the world, naive and innocent and yet strangely wise, despite how they were raised or their own level of intelligence. They tend to have a disdain for orderly normalicy and logic, preferring to be ruled by emotion and imaginative pursuits. There's more women than men (I've only seen about 2 or 3 boys of this type, and they were rather androgynous if not right out transgendered) but they all have this similar personality.
I've wondered once or twice if perhaps they really are descended from faerie people or something, though perhaps this is a lingering effect of my strong desire to believe in these things. I'm always been drawn to pixiefaces, they're naturally charismatic, even if they're arrogant and a tad narcissistic at times. The nicest of them are truely enchanting people. So I wonder, does anyone else notice the pixiefaces?
